Has antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative andGram-positive bacteria. Defensins are thought to kill microbes bypermeabilizing their plasma membrane. All DEFA5 peptides exertantimicrobial activities, but their potency is affected by peptideprocessing. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12021776,ECO:0000269|PubMed:15616305, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088326}. Lectin that binds to various sugars: galactose > mannose= fucose > N-acetylglucosamine > N-acetylgalactosamine(PubMed:10224141). Acts as a chemoattractant, probably involved inthe regulation of cell migration (PubMed:28301481).{ECO:0000269|PubMed:10224141, ECO:0000269|PubMed:28301481}.
