Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins. They preferentially interact with themselves in a homophilicmanner in connecting cells; cadherins may thus contribute to thesorting of heterogeneous cell types. (Microbial infection) Acts as a receptor for rhinovirusC. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:25848009}. May have a dual function during osteoblastdifferentiation. In the nucleus of undifferentiated osteoblasts, unphosphorylated form acts as a transcriptional component foractivation of osteoblast-specific genes like osteocalcin. Duringthe osteoblast to osteocyte transition phase it is phosphorylatedand exported into the extracellular matrix, where it regulatesnucleation of hydroxyapatite. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12615915}.
