May be involved in transcriptional regulation. Sulfotransferase that utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylylsulfate (PAPS) as sulfonate donor to catalyze the sulfateconjugation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs andxenobiotic compounds. Sulfonation increases the water solubilityof most compounds, and therefore their renal excretion, but it canalso result in bioactivation to form active metabolites. Sulfateshydroxysteroids like DHEA. Isoform 1 preferentially sulfonatescholesterol, and isoform 2 avidly sulfonates pregnenolone but notcholesterol.
