Component of the ESCRT-I complex, a regulator ofvesicular trafficking process. Required for the sorting ofendocytic ubiquitinated cargos into multivesicular bodies. May beinvolved in cell growth and differentiation.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:15240819}. Important in cell-cell recognition. Appears to functionin leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion. Interacts with integrinalpha-4/beta-1 (ITGA4/ITGB1) on leukocytes, and mediates bothadhesion and signal transduction. The VCAM1/ITGA4/ITGB1interaction may play a pathophysiologic role both in immuneresponses and in leukocyte emigration to sites of inflammation.
