Serine/threonine-protein kinase involved in autophagy inresponse to starvation. Acts upstream of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase PIK3C3 to regulate the formation of autophagophores, theprecursors of autophagosomes. Part of regulatory feedback loops inautophagy: acts both as a downstream effector and negativeregulator of mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) viainteraction with RPTOR. Activated via phosphorylation by AMPK andalso acts as a regulator of AMPK by mediating phosphorylation ofAMPK subunits PRKAA1, PRKAB2 and PRKAG1, leading to negativelyregulate AMPK activity. May phosphorylate ATG13/KIAA0652 andRPTOR; however such data need additional evidences. Plays a roleearly in neuronal differentiation and is required for granule cellaxon formation. Regulator of Hedgehog (Hh),required for both activation and inhibition of the Hh pathway inthe patterning of the neural tube. During neural tube development,it is required for formation of the most ventral cell types andfor full Hh pathway activation.
