Proton-coupled monocarboxylate transporter. Catalyzesthe rapid transport across the plasma membrane of manymonocarboxylates such as lactate, pyruvate, branched-chain oxoacids derived from leucine, valine and isoleucine, and the ketonebodies acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetate. Dependingon the tissue and on cicumstances, mediates the import or exportof lactic acid and ketone bodies. Required for normal nutrientassimilation, increase of white adipose tissue and body weightgain when on a high-fat diet. Plays a role in cellular responsesto a high-fat diet by modulating the cellular levels of lactateand pyruvate, small molecules that contribute to the regulation ofcentral metabolic pathways and insulin secretion, with concomitanteffects on plasma insulin levels and blood glucose homeostasis.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:17701893}. UDPGT is of major importance in the conjugation andsubsequent elimination of potentially toxic xenobiotics andendogenous compounds.
