Controls cell shape changes in the neuroepitheliumduring neural tube closure. Induces apical constriction inepithelial cells by promoting the apical accumulation of F-actinand myosin II, and probably by bundling stress fibers. Inducesapicobasal cell elongation by redistributing gamma-tubulin anddirecting the assembly of robust apicobasal microtubule arrays (Bysimilarity). {ECO:0000250}. Intracellular carrier for long-chain fatty acids andrelated active lipids, such as the endocannabinoid, that regulatesthe metabolism and actions of the ligands they bind. In additionto the cytosolic transport, selectively delivers specific fattyacids from the cytosol to the nucleus, wherein they activatenuclear receptors (PubMed:22170058). Delivers retinoic acid to thenuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta;which promotes proliferation and survival. May also serve as asynaptic carrier of endocannabinoid at central synapses and thuscontrols retrograde endocannabinoid signaling. Modulatesinflammation by regulating PTGES induction via NF-kappa-Bactivation, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) biosynthesis duringinflammation (By similarity). May be involved in keratinocytedifferentiation (PubMed:8092987). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q05816,ECO:0000269|PubMed:22170058, ECO:0000269|PubMed:8092987}.
