Histone methyltransferase involved in left-right axisspecification in early development and mitosis. Specificallytrimethylates 'Lys-9' of histone H3 (H3K9me3). H3K9me3 is aspecific tag for epigenetic transcriptional repression thatrecruits HP1 (CBX1, CBX3 and/or CBX5) proteins to methylatedhistones. Contributes to H3K9me3 in both the interspersedrepetitive elements and centromere-associated repeats. Plays arole in chromosome condensation and segregation during mitosis.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:20404330}. May function as a general inhibitor of the histonedeacetylase HDAC1. Binding to the pocket region of RB1 maydisplace HDAC1 from RB1/E2F complexes, leading to activation ofE2F target genes and cell cycle progression. Conversely,displacement of HDAC1 from SP1 bound to the CDKN1A promoter leadsto increased expression of this CDK inhibitor and blocks cellcycle progression.
