Q16143

This is the non-catalytic component of the activeenzyme, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of ATP coupled with theexchange of Na(+) and K(+) ions across the plasma membrane. Theexact function of the beta-2 subunit is not known. Mediates cell adhesion of neurons and astrocytes, andpromotes neurite outgrowth. {ECO:0000250}. Non-amyloid component of senile plaques found inAlzheimer disease. Could act as a regulator of SNCA aggregationprocess. Protects neurons from staurosporine and 6-hydroxydopamine (6OHDA)-stimulated caspase activation in a p53/TP53-dependent manner. Contributes to restore the SNCA anti-apoptoticfunction abolished by 6OHDA. Not found in the Lewy bodiesassociated with Parkinson disease.
