Transmembrane glycoprotein of the endoplasmic reticulumthat functions as a transcription activator and initiates theunfolded protein response (UPR) during endoplasmic reticulumstress. Cleaved upon ER stress, the N-terminal processed cyclicAMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-6 alpha translocates to thenucleus where it activates transcription of genes involved in theUPR. Binds DNA on the 5'-CCAC[GA]-3'half of the ER stress responseelement (ERSE) (5'-CCAAT-N(9)-CCAC[GA]-3') and of ERSE II (5'-ATTGG-N-CCACG-3'). Binding to ERSE requires binding of NF-Y toERSE. Could also be involved in activation of transcription by theserum response factor. May play a role in foveal development andcone function in the retina. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10564271,ECO:0000269|PubMed:11158310, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11779464,ECO:0000269|PubMed:26029869}. Cytoplasmic adapter regulating receptors of thesignaling lymphocytic activation molecule (SLAM) family such asCD84, SLAMF1, LY9 and CD244 (PubMed:11689425). In SLAM signalingseems to cooperate with SH2D1A/SAP. Plays a role in regulation ofeffector functions of natural killer (NK) cells by controllingsignal transduction through CD244/2B4 without effecting itstyrosine phosphorylation; downstream signaling involves PLCG1 andERK activation (PubMed:24687958). Activation of SLAMF7-mediated NKcell function does not effect receptor tyrosine phosphorylationbut distal signaling (By similarity). In the context of NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity does not enhance conjugate formation withtarget cells but stimulates polarization of the microtubule-organizing center and cytotoxic granules toward the NK cellsynapse (PubMed:24687958). Negatively regulates CD40-inducedcytokine production in dendritic cells downstream of SLAM familyreceptors probably by inducing activation of the PI3K pathway toinhibit p38 MAPK and JNK activation (By similarity).{ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:O35324, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11689425,ECO:0000269|PubMed:24687958, ECO:0000305|PubMed:21219180}.
