May act at junctions between the membrane and thecytoskeleton. Could play a role in phagocytic activities of tissuemacrophages, both in intracellular lysosomal metabolism andextracellular cell-cell and cell-pathogen interactions. Binds totissue- and organ-specific lectins or selectins, allowing homingof macrophage subsets to particular sites. Rapid recirculation ofCD68 from endosomes and lysosomes to the plasma membrane may allowmacrophages to crawl over selectin-bearing substrates or othercells.
