Putative histone methyltransferase that acts as atranscriptional repressor of smooth muscle gene expression.Promotes the transition from differentiated to proliferativesmooth muscle by suppressing differentiation and maintaining theproliferative potential of vascular smooth muscle cells. Alsoplays a role in endothelial cells by inhibiting endothelial cellproliferation, survival and differentiation. It is unclear whetherit has histone methyltransferase activity in vivo. According tosome authors, it does not act as a histone methyltransferase byitself and represses transcription by recruiting EHMT2/G9a.According to others, it possesses histone methyltransferaseactivity when associated with other proteins and specificallymethylates 'Lys-20' of histone H4 in vitro. 'Lys-20' methylationrepresents a specific tag for epigenetic transcriptionalrepression. {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q3UZD5}. Acts as a Mg(2+) transporter. Can also transport otherdivalent cations such as Ba(2+), Mn(2+), Sr(2+) and Co(2+) but toa much less extent than Mg(2+) (By similarity). May be a receptorfor ligands (trioxilins A3 and B3) from the hepoxilin pathway.{ECO:0000250, ECO:0000269|PubMed:15317751}.
