DNA-dependent RNA polymerase catalyzes the transcriptionof DNA into RNA using the four ribonucleoside triphosphates assubstrates. Second largest component of RNA polymerase II whichsynthesizes mRNA precursors and many functional non-coding RNAs.Proposed to contribute to the polymerase catalytic activity andforms the polymerase active center together with the largestsubunit. Pol II is the central component of the basal RNApolymerase II transcription machinery. It is composed of mobileelements that move relative to each other. RPB2 is part of thecore element with the central large cleft, the clamp element thatmoves to open and close the cleft and the jaws that are thought tograb the incoming DNA template (By similarity). {ECO:0000250,ECO:0000269|PubMed:9852112}. RNA-binding factor that may recruit target transcriptsto cytoplasmic protein-RNA complexes (mRNPs). This transcript'caging' into mRNPs allows mRNA transport and transient storage. It also modulates the rate and location at which targettranscripts encounter the translational apparatus and shields themfrom endonuclease attacks or microRNA-mediated degradation. Bindsto the 3'-UTR of CD44 mRNA and stabilizes it, hence promotes celladhesion and invadopodia formation in cancer cells. Binds to beta-actin/ACTB and MYC transcripts. Binds to the 5'-UTR of theinsulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) mRNAs.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:16541107, ECO:0000269|PubMed:23640942}.
