G-protein coupled opioid receptor that functions asreceptor for the endogenous neuropeptide nociceptin. Ligandbinding causes a conformation change that triggers signaling viaguanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) and modulates theactivity of down-stream effectors. Signaling via G proteinsmediates inhibition of adenylate cyclase activity and calciumchannel activity. Arrestins modulate signaling via G proteins andmediate the activation of alternative signaling pathways that leadto the activation of MAP kinases. Plays a role in modulatingnociception and the perception of pain. Proposed to play a role in neuronalvesicular trafficking, specifically involving pre-synapticmembrane proteins. Seems to be involved in signaling pathways thatare regulated by the prolonged activation of MAPK.
