Functions as a dual-specificity transcription factor,regulating the expression of both MAX-network and T-box familytarget genes. Functions as a repressor or an activator. Binds to5'-AATTTCACACCTAGGTGTGAAATT-3' core sequence and seems to regulateMYC-MAX target genes. Suppresses transcriptional activation by MYCand inhibits MYC-dependent cell transformation. Function activatedby heterodimerization with MAX. This heterodimerization serves thedual function of both generating an E-box-binding heterodimer andsimultaneously blocking interaction of a corepressor (Bysimilarity). {ECO:0000250}. Involved in regulation of TNF-alpha induced NF-kappa-Bactivation and apoptosis. Involved in modulation of 'Lys-48'-linked polyubiquitination status of TRAF2 and decreasesassociation of TRAF2 with RIPK1. Required for PTS1 targetsequence-dependent protein import into peroxisomes and PEX5stability; may cooperate with PEX6.
