Cotranslationally removes the N-terminal methionine fromnascent proteins. The N-terminal methionine is often cleaved whenthe second residue in the primary sequence is small and uncharged(Met-Ala-, Cys, Gly, Pro, Ser, Thr, or Val). Required for normalprogression through the cell cycle. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_03174, ECO:0000269|PubMed:16274222,ECO:0000269|PubMed:17114291}. Recognizes and binds the 7-methylguanosine-containingmRNA cap during an early step in the initiation of proteinsynthesis and facilitates ribosome binding by inducing theunwinding of the mRNAs secondary structures. Component of theCYFIP1-EIF4E-FMR1 complex which binds to the mRNA cap and mediatestranslational repression.
