Inward rectifier potassium channels are characterized bya greater tendency to allow potassium to flow into the cell ratherthan out of it. Their voltage dependence is regulated by theconcentration of extracellular potassium; as external potassium israised, the voltage range of the channel opening shifts to morepositive voltages. The inward rectification is mainly due to theblockage of outward current by internal magnesium. Transcription regulator that plays an essential role inerythroid and megakaryocytic cell differentiation. Essentialcofactor that acts via the formation of a heterodimer withtranscription factors of the GATA family GATA1, GATA2 and GATA3.Such heterodimer can both activate or repress transcriptionalactivity, depending on the cell and promoter context. Theheterodimer formed with GATA proteins is essential to activateexpression of genes such as NFE2, ITGA2B, alpha- and beta-globin,while it represses expression of KLF1. May be involved inregulation of some genes in gonads. May also be involved incardiac development, in a non-redundant way with ZFPM2/FOG2 (Bysimilarity). {ECO:0000250}.
