RNA-binding factor that may recruit target transcriptsto cytoplasmic protein-RNA complexes (mRNPs). This transcript'caging' into mRNPs allows mRNA transport and transient storage.It also modulates the rate and location at which targettranscripts encounter the translational apparatus and shields themfrom endonuclease attacks or microRNA-mediated degradation. Bindsto the 3'-UTR of CD44 mRNA and stabilizes it, hence promotes celladhesion and invadopodia formation in cancer cells. Binds to beta-actin/ACTB and MYC transcripts. Binds to the 5'-UTR of theinsulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) mRNAs.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:16541107, ECO:0000269|PubMed:23640942}. Has medium-chain fatty acid:CoA ligase activity withbroad substrate specificity (in vitro). Acts on acids from C(4) toC(11) and on the corresponding 3-hydroxy- and 2,3- or 3,4-unsaturated acids (in vitro). Functions as GTP-dependent lipoate-activating enzyme that generates the substrate forlipoyltransferase (By similarity). {ECO:0000250}.
