Dioxygenase that repairs alkylated DNA and RNA byoxidative demethylation. Has highest activity towards single-stranded RNA containing 3-methyluracil, followed by single-stranded DNA containing 3-methylthymine. Has low demethylaseactivity towards single-stranded DNA containing 1-methyladenine or3-methylcytosine (PubMed:18775698, PubMed:20376003). Specificallydemethylates N(6)-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA, the most prevalentinternal modification of messenger RNA (mRNA) in higher eukaryotes(PubMed:22002720, PubMed:26458103). Has no activity towards 1-methylguanine. Has no detectable activity towards double-strandedDNA. Requires molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate and iron.Contributes to the regulation of the global metabolic rate, energyexpenditure and energy homeostasis. Contributes to the regulationof body size and body fat accumulation (PubMed:18775698,PubMed:20376003). In particular, it is involved in the regulationof thermogenesis and the control of adipocyte differentiation intobrown or white fat cells (PubMed:26287746).{ECO:0000269|PubMed:18775698, ECO:0000269|PubMed:20376003,ECO:0000269|PubMed:22002720, ECO:0000269|PubMed:26287746,ECO:0000269|PubMed:26458103}. Key regulator of entry into cell division. Recruits andtargets histone methyltransferases KMT5B and KMT5C, leading toepigenetic transcriptional repression. Controls histone H4 'Lys-20' trimethylation. Probably acts as a transcription repressor byrecruiting chromatin-modifying enzymes to promoters. Potentinhibitor of E2F-mediated trans-activation, associatespreferentially with E2F5. Binds to cyclins A and E. Binds to andmay be involved in the transforming capacity of the adenovirus E1Aprotein. May act as a tumor suppressor.
