Required for genome-wide de novo methylation and isessential for the establishment of DNA methylation patterns duringdevelopment. DNA methylation is coordinated with methylation ofhistones. It modifies DNA in a non-processive manner and alsomethylates non-CpG sites. May preferentially methylate DNA linkerbetween 2 nucleosomal cores and is inhibited by histone H1. Playsa role in paternal and maternal imprinting. Required formethylation of most imprinted loci in germ cells. Acts as atranscriptional corepressor for ZBTB18. Recruited to trimethylated'Lys-36' of histone H3 (H3K36me3) sites. Can actively represstranscription through the recruitment of HDAC activity.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:16357870}. Catalyzes the formation of the signaling molecule cAMPin response to G-protein signaling. Participates in signalingcascades triggered by odorant receptors via its function in cAMPbiosynthesis. Required for the perception of odorants. Requiredfor normal sperm motility and normal male fertility.
