Regulatory subunit of the cyclin-dependent kinase pair(CDK9/cyclin T) complex, also called positive transcriptionelongation factor B (P-TEFB), which is proposed to facilitate thetransition from abortive to production elongation byphosphorylating the CTD (carboxy-terminal domain) of the largesubunit of RNA polymerase II (RNAP II) (PubMed:9499409,PubMed:15563843). The activity of this complex is regulated bybinding with 7SK snRNA (PubMed:11713533). Plays a role duringmuscle differentiation; P-TEFB complex interacts with MYOD1; thistripartite complex promotes the transcriptional activity of MYOD1through its CDK9-mediated phosphorylation and binds the chromatinof promoters and enhancers of muscle-specific genes; this eventcorrelates with hyperphosphorylation of the CTD domain of RNA polII (By similarity). In addition, enhances MYOD1-dependenttranscription through interaction with PKN1 (PubMed:16331689).Involved in early embryo development (By similarity).{ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q7TQK0, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11713533,ECO:0000269|PubMed:15563843, ECO:0000269|PubMed:16331689,ECO:0000269|PubMed:9499409}. (Microbial infection) Promotes transcriptionalactivation of early and late herpes simplex virus 1/HHV-1promoters. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:21509660}. Converts alpha-amino-beta-carboxymuconate-epsilon-semialdehyde (ACMS) to alpha-aminomuconate semialdehyde (AMS).ACMS can be converted non-enzymatically to quinolate (QA), a keyprecursor of NAD, and a potent endogenous excitotoxin of neuronalcells which is implicated in the pathogenesis of variousneurodegenerative disorders. In the presence of ACMSD, ACMS isconverted to AMS, a benign catabolite. ACMSD ultimately controlsthe metabolic fate of tryptophan catabolism along the kynureninepathway. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:19843166}.
