Functions as ATP-binding component of the Arp2/3 complexwhich is involved in regulation of actin polymerization andtogether with an activating nucleation-promoting factor (NPF)mediates the formation of branched actin networks. Seems tocontact the pointed end of the daughter actin filament.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:9000076}. ATP-dependent RNA helicase which is a subunit of theeIF4F complex involved in cap recognition and is required for mRNAbinding to ribosome. In the current model of translationinitiation, eIF4A unwinds RNA secondary structures in the 5'-UTRof mRNAs which is necessary to allow efficient binding of thesmall ribosomal subunit, and subsequent scanning for the initiatorcodon.
