Regulatory subunit of the cyclin-dependent kinase pair(CDK9/cyclin-T1) complex, also called positive transcriptionelongation factor B (P-TEFb), which is proposed to facilitate thetransition from abortive to productive elongation byphosphorylating the CTD (carboxy-terminal domain) of the largesubunit of RNA polymerase II (RNA Pol II).{ECO:0000269|PubMed:16109376, ECO:0000269|PubMed:16109377}. (Microbial infection) In case of HIV or SIV infections,binds to the transactivation domain of the viral nucleartranscriptional activator, Tat, thereby increasing Tat's affinityfor the transactivating response RNA element (TAR RNA). Serves asan essential cofactor for Tat, by promoting RNA Pol II activation,allowing transcription of viral genes.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:10329125, ECO:0000269|PubMed:10329126}. Regulatory subunit of lactose synthase, changes thesubstrate specificity of galactosyltransferase in the mammarygland making glucose a good acceptor substrate for this enzyme.This enables LS to synthesize lactose, the major carbohydratecomponent of milk. In other tissues, galactosyltransferasetransfers galactose onto the N-acetylglucosamine of theoligosaccharide chains in glycoproteins.
