Acyl-CoA synthetases (ACSL) activate long-chain fattyacids for both synthesis of cellular lipids, and degradation viabeta-oxidation. ACSL5 may activate fatty acids from exogenoussources for the synthesis of triacylglycerol destined forintracellular storage (By similarity). Utilizes a wide range ofsaturated fatty acids with a preference for C16-C18 unsaturatedfatty acids (By similarity). It was suggested that it may alsostimulate fatty acid oxidation (By similarity). At the villus tipof the crypt-villus axis of the small intestine may sensitizeepithelial cells to apoptosis specifically triggered by the deathligand TRAIL. May have a role in the survival of glioma cells.{ECO:0000250, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17681178,ECO:0000269|PubMed:18806831, ECO:0000269|PubMed:19459852}. Involved in the post-translational conjugation ofarginine to the N-terminal aspartate or glutamate of a protein. This arginylation is required for degradation of the protein viathe ubiquitin pathway. Does not arginylate cysteine residues (Bysimilarity). {ECO:0000250}.
