Chromatin reader component of the ATAC complex, acomplex with histone acetyltransferase activity on histones H3 andH4. YEATS2 specifically recognizes and binds histone H3crotonylated at 'Lys-27' (H3K27cr) (PubMed:27103431).Crotonylation marks active promoters and enhancers and confersresistance to transcriptional repressors (PubMed:27103431).{ECO:0000269|PubMed:18838386, ECO:0000269|PubMed:19103755,ECO:0000269|PubMed:27103431}. Acts as a transcriptional repressor. Interacts with MXI1to repress MYC responsive genes and antagonize MYC oncogenicactivities. Interacts with MAD-MAX heterodimers by binding to MAD.The heterodimer then represses transcription by tethering SIN3B toDNA. Also forms a complex with FOXK1 which repressestranscription. With FOXK1, regulates cell cycle progressionprobably by repressing cell cycle inhibitor genes expression.{ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q62141}.
