Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules. Itbinds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the betachain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha chain. TUBB3plays a critical role in proper axon guidance and mantainance.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:20074521}. Voltage-modulated Ca(2+)-activated, monovalent cationchannel (VCAM) that mediates a transient membrane depolarizationand plays a central role in taste transduction. Monovalent-specific, non-selective cation channel that mediates the transportof Na(+), K(+) and Cs(+) ions equally well. Activated directly byincreases in intracellular Ca(2+), but is impermeable to it.Gating is voltage-dependent and displays rapid activation anddeactivation kinetics upon channel stimulation even duringsustained elevations in Ca(2+). Also activated by a fastintracellular Ca(2+) increase in response to inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate-producing receptor agonists. The channel is blockedby extracellular acidification. External acidification has 2effects, a fast reversible block of the current and a slowerirreversible enhancement of current inactivation. Is a highlytemperature-sensitive, heat activated channel showing a steepincrease of inward currents at temperatures between 15 and 35degrees Celsius. Heat activation is due to a shift of the voltage-dependent activation curve to negative potentials. Activated byarachidonic acid in vitro. May be involved in perception ofbitter, sweet and umami tastes. May also be involved in sensingsemiochemicals. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:14634208}.
