Component of the ESCRT-I complex, a regulator ofvesicular trafficking process. Binds to ubiquitinated cargoproteins and is required for the sorting of endocyticubiquitinated cargos into multivesicular bodies (MVBs). Mediatesthe association between the ESCRT-0 and ESCRT-I complex. Requiredfor completion of cytokinesis; the function requires CEP55. May beinvolved in cell growth and differentiation. Acts as a negativegrowth regulator. Involved in the budding of many viruses throughan interaction with viral proteins that contain a late-buddingmotif P-[ST]-A-P. This interaction is essential for viral particlebudding of numerous retroviruses. Required for the exosomalrelease of SDCBP, CD63 and syndecan (PubMed:22660413).
