Succinyl-CoA synthetase functions in the citric acidcycle (TCA), coupling the hydrolysis of succinyl-CoA to thesynthesis of either ATP or GTP and thus represents the only stepof substrate-level phosphorylation in the TCA. The alpha subunitof the enzyme binds the substrates coenzyme A and phosphate, whilesuccinate binding and specificity for either ATP or GTP isprovided by different beta subunits. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_03222}.
