May be involved in transcription regulation of the alpha2(I) collagen gene where it binds to the single-strandedpolypyrimidine sequences in the promoter region. {ECO:0000250}. Involved in translocation of long-chain fatty acids(LFCA) across the plasma membrane. Appears to be the principalfatty acid transporter in small intestinal enterocytes. Plays arole in the formation of the epidermal barrier. Required for fatabsorption in early embryogenesis. Has acyl-CoA ligase activityfor long-chain and very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs).Indirectly inhibits RPE65 via substrate competition and viaproduction of VLCFA derivatives like lignoceroyl-CoA. Preventslight-induced degeneration of rods and cones (By similarity).{ECO:0000250}.
