Divalent transition metal (iron and manganese)transporter involved in iron metabolism and host resistance tocertain pathogens. Macrophage-specific membrane transportfunction. Controls natural resistance to infection withintracellular parasites. Pathogen resistance involvessequestration of Fe(2+) and Mn(2+), cofactors of both prokaryoticand eukaryotic catalases and superoxide dismutases, not only toprotect the macrophage against its own generation of reactiveoxygen species, but to deny the cations to the pathogen forsynthesis of its protective enzymes.
