Key regulator of cytokinesis that cross-linksantiparrallel microtubules at an average distance of 35 nM.Essential for controlling the spatiotemporal formation of themidzone and successful cytokinesis. Required for KIF14localization to the central spindle and midbody. Required torecruit PLK1 to the spindle. Stimulates PLK1 phosphorylation ofRACGAP1 to allow recruitment of ECT2 to the central spindle. In epithelial cells, theVPS33B:VIPAS39 complex may play a role in the apical recyclingpathway and in the maintenance of the apical-basolateral polarity(PubMed:20190753).
