Ubiquitin-like protein which plays an important role incell cycle control and embryogenesis. Covalent attachment to itssubstrates requires prior activation by the E1 complex UBE1C-APPBP1 and linkage to the E2 enzyme UBE2M. Attachment of NEDD8 tocullins activates their associated E3 ubiquitin ligase activity,and thus promotes polyubiquitination and proteasomal degradationof cyclins and other regulatory proteins.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:10318914, ECO:0000269|PubMed:10597293,ECO:0000269|PubMed:11953428}. Acts as a transcriptional activator which regulates theexpression of several rod-specific genes, including RHO and PDE6B(PubMed:21981118). Functions also as a transcriptionalcoactivator, stimulating transcription mediated by thetranscription factor CRX and NR2E3 (PubMed:17335001). Binds in asequence-specific manner to the rhodopsin promoter(PubMed:17335001). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17335001,ECO:0000269|PubMed:21981118}.
