In the hair cortex, hair keratin intermediate filamentsare embedded in an interfilamentous matrix, consisting of hairkeratin-associated proteins (KRTAP), which are essential for theformation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft through theirextensive disulfide bond cross-linking with abundant cysteineresidues of hair keratins.
