Transfer of a sulfur ion to cyanide or to other thiolcompounds. Also has weak rhodanese activity. Detoxifies cyanideand is required for thiosulfate biosynthesis. Acts as anantioxidant. In combination with cysteine aminotransferase (CAT),contributes to the catabolism of cysteine and is an importantproducer of hydrogen sulfide in the brain, retina and vascularendothelial cells. Hydrogen sulfide H(2)S is an important synapticmodulator, signaling molecule, smooth muscle contractor andneuroprotectant. Regulates actinfilament reorganization via its interaction with the Arp2/3complex. Important for efficient actin polymerization. Possibleregulator of lymphocyte and platelet function.
