Heterochromatin component that specifically recognizesand binds methylated 'Lys-9' of histone H3 (H3K9me) and promotesrecruitment of proteins that mediate epigenetic repression(PubMed:20871592, PubMed:26022416). Mediates recruitment of theHUSH complex to H3K9me3 sites: the HUSH complex is recruited togenomic loci rich in H3K9me3 and is probably required to maintaintranscriptional silencing by promoting recruitment of SETDB1, ahistone methyltransferase that mediates further deposition ofH3K9me3 (PubMed:26022416). Binds H3K9me and promotes DNAmethylation by recruiting DNMT3A to target CpG sites; these can besituated within the coding region of the gene (PubMed:20871592).Mediates down-regulation of CDH1 expression (PubMed:20871592).{ECO:0000269|PubMed:20871592, ECO:0000269|PubMed:26022416}. Catalytic component of a P4-ATPase flippase complexwhich catalyzes the hydrolysis of ATP coupled to the transport ofaminophospholipids from the outer to the inner leaflet of variousmembranes and ensures the maintenance of asymmetric distributionof phospholipids. Phospholipid translocation seems also to beimplicated in vesicle formation and in uptake of lipid signalingmolecules. Reconstituted to liposomes, the ATP8A2:TMEM30A flippasecomplex predomiminantly transports phosphatidylserine (PS) and toa lesser extent phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). Proposed tofunction in the generation and maintenance of phospholipidasymmetry in photoreceptor disk membranes and neuronal axonmembranes. May be involved in vesicle trafficking in neuronalcells. Involved in regulation of neurite outgrowth; acting insynergy with TMEM30A. Required for normal visual and auditoryfunction; involved in photoreceptor and inner ear spiral ganglioncell survival.
