Lectin that binds to various sugars: galactose > mannose= fucose > N-acetylglucosamine > N-acetylgalactosamine(PubMed:10224141). Acts as a chemoattractant, probably involved inthe regulation of cell migration (PubMed:28301481).{ECO:0000269|PubMed:10224141, ECO:0000269|PubMed:28301481}. Potent inhibitor of the complement membrane attackcomplex (MAC) action. Acts by binding to the C8 and/or C9complements of the assembling MAC, thereby preventingincorporation of the multiple copies of C9 required for completeformation of the osmolytic pore. This inhibitor appears to bespecies-specific. Involved in signal transduction for T-cellactivation complexed to a protein tyrosine kinase. The soluble form from urine retains its specificcomplement binding activity, but exhibits greatly reduced abilityto inhibit MAC assembly on cell membranes.
