MIF

P14174

Guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) areinvolved as modulators or transducers in various transmembranesignaling systems. Pro-inflammatory cytokine. Involved in the innate immuneresponse to bacterial pathogens. The expression of MIF at sites ofinflammation suggests a role as mediator in regulating thefunction of macrophages in host defense. Counteracts the anti-inflammatory activity of glucocorticoids. Has phenylpyruvatetautomerase and dopachrome tautomerase activity (in vitro), butthe physiological substrate is not known. It is not clear whetherthe tautomerase activity has any physiological relevance, andwhether it is important for cytokine activity.{ECO:0000269|PubMed:15908412, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17443469,ECO:0000269|PubMed:23776208}.
