Thiol-specific peroxidase that catalyzes the reductionof hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides to water andalcohols, respectively. Plays a role in cell protection againstoxidative stress by detoxifying peroxides and as sensor ofhydrogen peroxide-mediated signaling events. Might participate inthe signaling cascades of growth factors and tumor necrosisfactor-alpha by regulating the intracellular concentrations ofH(2)O(2). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:9497357}.
